How to Clean Suede and Nubuck Shoes Without Ruining Them

Suede and nubuck: dry first, always

Suede is leather with a raised nap. Water flattens and stains it, so the first rule is dry cleaning: brush, erase, then restore colour.

The method

1. Brush the nap. Use a suede and nubuck sponge in one direction to lift flattened fibres.
2. Attack marks dry. Rub gently across the mark, and do not soak it.
3. Restore the colour. A renovator colour spray brings faded black, brown or havan back to an even tone and keeps the material soft.
4. Protect. Reapply protector after every few wears, especially in dusty months.

What ruins suede

Soap and water, hot air drying, and stiff wire brushes. If your shoes get soaked, stuff them with paper and dry slowly at room temperature, then brush the nap back up.
